Spain advances in the management of agricultural plastic waste with the creation of MAPLA

MAPLA is born, the new Association of producers of plastics for agriculture that will organize a national system of management of agricultural plastic waste to boost its recycling

Madrid/Paris 2020, February 10^th

The new association MAPLA (Environment Agriculture and Plastics), has as main purpose to organize and finance the new system model to manage the non-packaging agricultural plastic waste. Promoved by ANAIP, CICLOPLAST and APE EUROPE, founding members, MAPLA was established last Thursday, February 6, by Spanish manufacturers and importers of agricultural plastics. The headquarters of the Association is in Seville.

MAPLA represents 90% of the transformers and distributors of agricultural plastic films and is expected to grow progressively incorporating other plastic products used in agricultural production (ropes, meshes, irrigation tapes, etc.). Spain is the main European market for these products due to the important area of ​​protected crops, which, thanks to plastic, are much more productive, with considerable savings in resources (water, energy, pesticides and fertilizers).

MAPLA will organize the management of films used throughout the national territory, financing the collection and recovery of waste through an eco-contribution from the first commercialization of the products, similar to other models already implemented in Spain such as tires, containers or electronic equipment

MAPLA's objectives are to prevent the spillage of agricultural plastics in nature, to facilitate the management of their waste, and thus increase the rates of collection and recycling of plastic. It will also allow the use of waste as resources, in line with the European Plastics Strategy, thus promoting the Circular Economy of plastic.

Currently, many of the non-packaging agricultural plastic waste is already being recycled, but an organized model makes it easier for the farmer to manage and is much more efficient. The first collection operations promoted by MAPLA are planned for the year 2021.

MAPLA invites farmers, cooperatives, marketers and distributors to join the new national model, in order to better meet farmers' expectations and the needs of the environment.

España avanza en la gestión de los residuos plásticos agrícolas con la creación de MAPLA

Nace MAPLA, la nueva Asociación de productores de plásticos para agricultura que organizará un sistema nacional de gestión de los residuos plásticos agrícolas  para impulsar su reciclado

La nueva asociación MAPLA (Medio Ambiente Agricultura y Plásticos), tiene como fin principal organizar y financiar el nuevo modelo de sistema para gestionar los residuos plásticos agrícolas no envases. Promovida por ANAIP, CICLOPLAST y APE EUROPE, miembros fundadores, MAPLA fue constituida el pasado jueves 6 de febrero por los fabricantes e importadores españoles de plásticos agrícolas. La sede de la Asociación se encuentra en Sevilla.

En MAPLA están representados el 90% de los transformadores y distribuidores de filmes plásticos agrícolas y está previsto que crezca progresivamente incorporando otros productos plásticos que se utilizan en la producción agraria (cordeles, mallas, cintas de riego, etc.). España es el principal mercado europeo de estos productos debido a la importante superficie de cultivos protegidos, que, gracias al plástico son mucho más productivos, con un considerable ahorro de recursos (agua, energía, pesticidas y fertilizantes).

MAPLA organizará la gestión de los filmes usados en todo el territorio nacional, financiando la recogida y valorización de los residuos mediante una eco-contribución desde la primera comercialización de los productos, similar a otros modelos ya implantados en España como los de neumáticos, envases o equipos electrónicos.

Los objetivos de MAPLA son evitar el vertido de plásticos agrícolas en la naturaleza, facilitar a los agricultores la gestión de sus residuos, e incrementar así los índices de recogida y reciclado del plástico. También permitirá la utilización de residuos como recursos, en línea con la Estrategia Europea de Plásticos, fomentando así la Economía Circular del plástico.

Actualmente muchos de los residuos plásticos agrícolas no envases  ya se están reciclando, pero un modelo organizado facilita la gestión al agricultor y es mucho más eficiente. Las primeras operaciones de recogida promovidas por MAPLA están previstas para el año 2021.

MAPLA invita a los agricultores, cooperativas, comercializadoras y distribuidores a unirse al nuevo modelo nacional, a fin de satisfacer mejor las expectativas de los agricultores y las necesidades del medio ambiente.
